LANAP Aftercare Instructions

If you’ve recently undergone (or are preparing for) LANAP® laser gum treatment, proper aftercare is essential to ensure optimal healing and long-term results. LANAP is a minimally invasive alternative to traditional gum surgery, but following post-treatment instructions closely plays a major role in your recovery.

Below, our Fort Bend Perio team outlines everything you need to know about LANAP aftercare, including what to eat, what to avoid, and how to support healthy healing.

What Is LANAP? (and Why Aftercare Matters)

LANAP (Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure) uses advanced dental laser technology to treat gum disease while preserving healthy tissue. Because the procedure stimulates natural healing and bone regeneration, your aftercare directly impacts how well the gums reattach and heal.

You can learn more about the procedure itself on our LANAP Laser Gum Treatment page.

What to Expect During LANAP Recovery

Most patients experience:

  • Minimal bleeding within the first day
  • Gradual reduction in swelling over 3–5 days
  • Noticeable gum tightening as healing progresses

Full healing and tissue reattachment can continue over several weeks, with ongoing improvements in gum health.

Immediate Aftercare: First 24-48 Hours

During the first two days after LANAP treatment, it’s normal to experience mild soreness or swelling. To protect the treated areas:

  • Avoid brushing or flossing the treated gums
  • Do not use mouthwash unless prescribed
  • Avoid smoking or vaping
  • Apply ice packs externally if swelling occurs
  • Take prescribed medications exactly as directed

For the best results and quick healing, we recommend resting and avoiding strenuous activity for at least 24 hours after the procedure.

Diet Guidelines After LANAP

Your diet plays a critical role in healing, in that certain foods or textures can irritate the treated gum tissue, disrupt clot formation, or slow the natural reattachment process during recovery.

  • Yogurt
  • Scrambled eggs
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Protein shakes
  • Smooth soups (lukewarm)

Foods to Avoid:

  • Crunchy or hard foods
  • Spicy foods
  • Hot beverages
  • Seeds, chips, nuts, and crusty bread

Stick to soft foods to prevent disrupting the healing gum tissue.

Oral Hygiene After LANAP

Proper hygiene is essential, but timing matters.

  • Do not brush treated areas for the first 7–10 days
  • Brush untreated areas gently with a soft toothbrush
  • Use any prescribed antimicrobial rinses as instructed
  • After your follow-up visit, your periodontist will guide you on when to resume brushing and flossing normally

Follow-Up Appointments Are Key

Attending your scheduled follow-up visits allows our team to:

  • Monitor healing progress
  • Remove plaque buildup safely
  • Adjust home-care instructions if needed

These visits are essential to the long-term success of LANAP treatment.

When to Call Your Periodontist

Contact your treating periodontist if you experience:

  • Excessive bleeding
  • Severe or worsening pain
  • Signs of infection (fever, pus, increasing swelling)

Early communication helps prevent complications.

Supporting Long-Term Results

LANAP can dramatically improve gum health, but maintenance is crucial. Consistent oral hygiene, regular periodontal cleanings, and healthy lifestyle habits will help protect your results for years to come.
