How Long Do Dental Implants Take?

The upfront time investment of dental implants affords a long-term solution for missing teeth, offering durability, functionality, and a natural appearance. And with proper care, dental implants can last a lifetime.

That said, if you’re considering them, it’s reasonable to want to know how long the process takes. That depends on several factors, including healing time and the complexity of your case.

Let’s break it down step by step.

Step 1: Initial Consultation (1-2 Weeks)

The process begins with a consultation with your periodontist. During this appointment, your oral health will be assessed through exams and imaging (such as X-rays or 3D scans). If you’re a candidate for dental implants, your periodontist will develop a treatment plan tailored to your needs.

Step 2: Tooth Extraction & Bone Grafting (If Needed) (2-6 Months)

If you have a damaged or failing tooth that needs removal, the extraction is performed first. Some patients may also require bone grafting to ensure there’s enough bone to support the implant. The healing period for bone grafting can take several months, typically between 2 to 6, depending on the extent of the graft.

Step 3: Implant Placement Surgery (1-2 Hours, Healing: 3-6 Months)

Once your mouth is ready, the titanium implant is surgically placed into the jawbone. This procedure takes about 1-2 hours per implant. After placement, the bone must fuse with the implant through a process called osseointegration, which typically takes 3 to 6 months.

Step 4: Abutment Placement (2-4 Weeks Healing Time)

After the implant has fused with the jawbone, an abutment (a small connector piece) is attached to the implant. This step requires a minor procedure to expose the implant and place the abutment. Healing from this procedure usually takes about 2 to 4 weeks.

Step 5: Final Crown Placement (1-2 Weeks)

Once the gums have healed around the abutment, a custom-made dental crown is placed. Your periodontist will ensure that the crown fits properly, looks natural, and functions well. This step usually takes 1 to 2 weeks, including adjustments, if necessary.

Total Timeline for Dental Implants

  • If no bone grafting is needed: 4-6 months
  • If bone grafting is required: 6-12 months
