Is Gum Disease Contagious?

While gum disease itself is not contagious, consistent exposure (such as through kissing or sharing utensils) can increase the likelihood of developing it, as the bacteria that causes it can be transmitted through saliva.

If you or a loved one are diagnosed with gum disease, know that the treatment of the infected individual’s disease, along with good oral hygiene of the person who might be exposed, goes a long way in preventing the spread of the disease.

How Gum Disease Develops

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is caused by bacteria in plaque. When plaque builds up along the gumline, it triggers inflammation and infection.

The early stage, gingivitis, can progress to periodontitis, which can lead to gum recession, bone loss, and even tooth loss if left untreated. Gingivitis can be cured with dental intervention, but periodontitis is a lifelong condition that will need to be continuously monitored and treated.

Can You Catch Gum Disease from Someone Else?

While you cannot “catch” gum disease the way you would a viral infection, the bacteria that contribute to gum disease can be spread through saliva. This means certain behaviors can increase the risk of transmission, such as:

  • Kissing – Saliva exchange can transfer harmful oral bacteria.
  • Sharing Utensils or Drinks – Using the same spoon, fork, straw, or cup as someone with gum disease may expose you to bacteria.
  • Using the Same Toothbrush – Sharing a toothbrush can introduce bacteria directly to your gums.

Who Is at Higher Risk?

While exposure to oral bacteria does not guarantee gum disease, certain factors increase the risk:

  • Poor oral hygiene
  • A weakened immune system
  • Smoking or tobacco use
  • A diet high in sugar and processed foods
  • Chronic conditions like diabetes

How to Protect Yourself from Gum Disease

Preventing gum disease starts with good oral hygiene and smart habits:

  • Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste
  • Floss daily to remove plaque between teeth
  • Avoid sharing utensils, drinks, or toothbrushes
  • Schedule regular dental cleanings and checkups
  • Maintain a healthy diet and avoid smoking
