® Surgical Technique (PST) to treat gum recession, a common issue facing many patients.
What Is Gum Recession?
Gum recession is a gradual process where the gum tissue surrounding your teeth slowly pulls back. As this occurs, a great portion of your teeth and even the roots become exposed. These gaps between your teeth and gums are breeding grounds for bacteria. If left untreated, you can severely damage your teeth, gums, and even experience tooth loss.
Why Does Gum Recession Occur?
Gum disease is the primary cause of gum recession. Without a good oral hygiene routine, bacteria in your mouth can begin to form into plaque and even tartar, a sticky substance that irritates your gums. If left untreated, this can develop into gum disease.
Aside from gum disease, your tooth brushing technique may also be causing your gums to pull back from your teeth. Remember to always brush your teeth gently with a soft-bristled brush—vigorous brushing can damage your enamel and cause gums to recede. Genetics, hormonal changes, and other factors can also make gums recede.
What Is the Pinhole Surgical Technique?
It is important to treat receding gums before more severe problems develop. Dr. Dyer uses the Pinhole Surgical technique to restore the look and function of patients’ gums. During this procedure, we will make a small hole with a needle in the gum tissue. Then, using our specially-designed instruments, we loosen gum tissue and guide it back where it has receded. This technique does not require making incisions or a suture – and produces instant results!
