Brushing your teeth twice a day doesn’t guarantee you’re giving your mouth all the attention it needs. Poor dental hygiene can lead to gum recession and a higher risk of gum disease. Proper brushing techniques and ensuring you have the right tools can make sure you have all of your bases covered when pursuing a more thorough clean. Dr Dyer has some simple steps you can take to improve your brushing and take your dental care routine to the next level.
Use Proper Brushing Technique
Since a young age you’ve probably been taught to brush using a “sawing”, or back and forth, method of brushing. Dr Dyer recommends switching to an up and down brushing method. This reduces the risk of gum recession and is a superior cleaning method for your teeth. This method is also echoed by the American Dental Association (ADA.
Pick the Right Brush
According to the International Dental Health Association, adults should use a small or medium-sized toothbrush that allows the bristles to reach small crevices in your mouth. Dr. Dyer also recommends using a soft bristle toothbrush for all ages. Medium and hard bristle toothbrushes can damage your enamel and gums. It’s important to use the right grip as well, holding the brush with your fingertips for a loser grip helps prevent brushing too hard. The ADA also recommends replacing your brush three or four times a year.
Floss
Regular flossing is one of the most effective ways to clean between your teeth. Flossing helps remove debris and plaque between teeth and reduces the likelihood of gum disease and tooth decay. The ADA recommends flossing daily, before your brush.
