What Are Dental Implants?

 Dental Implants

Dental implants are metal posts that band with the jaw bone beneath your gums. A dental implant acts as an anchor for a crown, bridge, or denture. While dental implants require surgery, they are an excellent long term solution for replacing teeth. There are several advantages of dental implants from improved appearance and oral health to improvements with speech and eating.

How Do They Work?

Because dental implants are bonded to your jawbone, they are extremely stable. This support is needed for replacement teeth, and help minimize shifting or slipping while eating. The bond also helps make the dental implants, including crowns, feel more natural than conventional dentures.

Traditional bridges and dentures are not comfortable and in some cases not possible.  Conventional bridges require the use of adjacent teeth of the space left by the missing tooth. This is not the case with dental implants which do not need surrounding teeth to help secure your replacement tooth.

Dental implants are usually slightly more expensive than other tooth replacement options but are a more natural and more comfortable.  Good oral health, especially healthy gums, are an important factor to getting dental implants. As with real teeth dental implants must also be cared for as a part of your oral hygiene, including regular visits to your dentist or periodontist.

Placement:

Implants require one surgical procedure to place the implant directly to the bone in your jaw. A second (non-surgical) procedure, after the surrounding gums have healed, is to connect a post to the implant. Finally, an artificial tooth is attached to the post, or grouped together on a bridge or denture by your general dentist.
